Nine ways to safely choose the best contractor for your project:
 
  1. Get one to three estimates from qualified contractors
  2. Check with Maryland Home Improvement Commission to ensure current licensing, bonding and insurance.
  3. Contact the BBB to check on number (if any) of complaints and resolution of these complaints.
  4. Speak to at least three references
  5. Check independent ratings and reviews
  6. Check affiliates i.e. NARI, local Chamber of Commerce or other agencies or associations
  7. Evaluate length of time in business (The average contractor lasts under 2 years)
  8. Length and quality of warranty
  9. Will they provide proof they have called Miss Utility BEFORE they dig near your utilities?
How to avoid common mistakes that WILL cost you plenty:
 
  1. Poor design – too small or too large, wrong spot/lay-out
  2. Going with a contractor JUST BECAUSE he is the cheapest bid
  3. Doing it yourself
  4. Taking full responsibility by pulling your own permits
  5. Accepting a materials only warranty
  6. Signing a contract with no start and completion dates
  7. Giving a check to an unlicensed contractor

  4. Insist on pre-construction meeting with your service team BEFORE the project starts
  5. Make sure all of your expectations are down in writing
  6. Have your Home Owners Association requirements ready.
